Editorial Guidelines — Section1.in

Section1.in is committed to delivering accurate, objective, and timely legal journalism, case summaries, statutory updates, and analytical commentary. Our mission is to make the law accessible to legal practitioners, academics, law students, and the general public while maintaining the highest standards of professional integrity.

1. Mission and Core Editorial Principles

  • Accuracy First: Legal reporting demands precision. Every case summary, legislative update, and statutory interpretation must be verified against official primary sources.
  • Neutrality and Impartiality: Reporting on judicial decisions, ongoing trials, and legislative debates must remain balanced, objective, and devoid of sensationalism or personal bias.
  • Clarity and Accessibility: Content should distill complex legal procedures and statutory language into clear, professional, and accessible English without compromising technical accuracy.
  • Independence: Editorial decisions are made strictly on merit and public/legal significance, free from political, commercial, or third-party influence.

2. Sourcing and Case Law Verification

  • Primary Sources Required: All reporting on judicial pronouncements (Supreme Court of India, High Courts, Tribunals, and Subordinate Courts) must cite the official order or judgment, bench composition, case title, citation/case number, and date of disposal.
  • No Reliance on Unverified Secondhand Reports: Orders must be verified through official court portals (e.g., eCourts, Supreme Court/High Court repositories) before reporting operative portions or ratio decidendi.
  • Distinction Between Obiter and Ratio: Writers must clearly distinguish between the binding holding (ratio decidendi) of a judgment and passing judicial observations (obiter dicta).
  • Interim Orders vs. Final Disposal: Coverage of ongoing litigation must explicitly distinguish between interim directions, notices, stay orders, and final judgments to avoid misleading readers.

3. Reporting on Sensitive and Sub-Judice Matters

  • Protection of Identities: In strict compliance with Indian law (including Section 72 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 / Section 228A IPC, and the POCSO Act), the identity of victims of sexual offenses, minors, and matrimonial dispute parties (where mandated by court direction) will never be disclosed directly or indirectly.
  • Contempt of Court: Content must observe the bounds of fair comment under the Contempt of Courts Act, 1971. Commentary must critique the reasoning of a judgment respectfully and analytically, without scandalizing the judiciary or attributing improper motives to judicial officers.
  • Presumption of Innocence: In all criminal reporting, accused persons must be described as accused/under-trial until a final conviction is handed down by a competent court.

4. Contributed Articles and Guest Submissions

  • Peer/Advocate Review: Submissions from advocates, academicians, and law students undergo preliminary review by our legal editorial desk to verify statutory references, case citations, and reasoning.
  • Originality and Plagiarism: All submissions must be entirely original. Plagiarism, uncredited reproduction of external analysis, or verbatim reproduction without quotation marks and proper attribution results in immediate rejection.
  • Disclosure of Conflicts: Contributors must disclose any active representation or personal/commercial interest in the matters, litigants, or legislation they are analyzing.
  • Editorial Discretion: Section1.in reserves the right to edit guest submissions for length, grammatical clarity, title formatting, and adherence to legal style guides prior to publication.

5. Corrections and Retraction Policy

  • Prompt Corrections: When a factual or typographical error—such as an incorrect citation, wrong party name, or misstated court date—is brought to our attention, it will be rectified promptly.
  • Transparency: For substantive errors altering the legal context of a report, an explicit correction note will be appended at the end or top of the article indicating the date of the correction and the change made.
  • Reporting Errors: Readers, advocates, and litigants can flag discrepancies or request corrections by emailing the editorial desk at paperpageinternational@gmail.com or paperpageindia@gmail.com.

6. Use of Technology and Artificial Intelligence

  • Human Editorial Oversight: While digital tools and assisted research may be used for preliminary drafting, workflow efficiency, or formatting, every piece of content published on Section1.in must be reviewed, fact-checked, and approved by a qualified human editor.
  • Prohibition of Hallucinated Citations: Automated case generation tools must never be used without manual verification against verified law reports or official court dockets.
